A 10-inch, 12-megapixel front camera and speakers are available on the Facebook Portal Go.
A mobile version of the Portal video chat device has been presented by Facebook Inc., which seeks to offer the mobile Alexa hardware and other so-called smart speakers of Amazon.com Inc. A 10-inch screen, 12-megapixel front camera, and speakers are included in the product called the Portal Go. There is also a rechargeable battery, therefore it doesn't need to remain connected to a wall, first for the Portal lineup of nearly three years old.
This suggests that the portal is going into Apple Inc.'s iPad and other tablets, but the main use of the device is still video-conferencing. Facebook maintains. And – in a hefty three kilograms (1,4 pounds) – lugging around is more difficult than an iPad.
Facebook will have to persuade customers why such a product is necessary. Many tablets are as good as a portal and are already fixed in the homes of consumers. An intelligent mobile speaker could be more difficult to sell.
The company marketed the technology so that video conversations can easily be transported from room to space and music is heard throughout the house. The price is also less expensive than an iPad at $199. The basic iPad is $329, although renovated models and tablets are much less expensive to find. Apple is currently selling an iPad for 2017 for $199, and Amazon and others are providing tablets for less than $200.
The new $349 Portal+ was launched on Tuesday by Facebook with a 14-centimeter display, as well as better speakers. The unit still needs a constant connection to the wall and weighs 4 pounds. At a demonstration, Facebook said some consumers would like to use the device alongside their desktop computer as a dedicated video chat device.
Partially, the video conference market is followed by Facebook. The new models will work with Microsoft Teams, BlueJeans, GoToMeeting, Zoom, and WebEx in addition to supporting Facebook's video-chat system and Amazon's Alexa voice control. There is a digital photo frame feature on the smart screens and third-party apps such as Spotify.
On 19 October, Facebook said, both new products will be shipped to consumers. It is fighting for new devices during a crowded season. Last week Apple launched its latest technology, and Amazon will host a launch event on 28 September.
